About a year or so ago, a new bar opened up in my local area. I was reading an article on the bar and it stated that this bar hoped to have the largest variety of Rum Drinks in the world by the end of the year. At the time the total stood at about 80 varieties. It has since grown to over 100 different types of Rum.
Having not really had much to do with rum drinks in my past, I was drawn to the establishment, also mainly due to the pretty decor in the glossy pages of the magazine the article was featured in. Never the less, I began my Rum journey!
After sampling some of the cheaper Rums on offer (under $10/glass) I found that I had quite a liking for this old, yet un-ventured (by me anyway) liquor, and being budget conscious thought “Hey why not try all the cheaper rums for the next few weeks, at least that way I can learn to appreciate the finer Rums if I’m going to be paying for them!”
Over the next 3 months, I strolled down to my rum bar every Thursday night, introducing different friends to this wonderful drink (turns out there were a lot of rum varieties for around 10 bucks a glass). I always had an entertaining evening with friends discussing what flavours we could pick and arguing over which Rum tasted better.
We were constantly trying different styles – Rum on Ice, Rum Fresh Lime and Dry Ginger, cocktails etc… I settled on rum with crushed ice, a few chunks of lime and dry, that’s my favourite and as the friendly bar man (who I like to call my Rum Guru!) said “that is the best way to introduce yourself to rum, as dry ginger doesn’t overpower the rum taste like other sweeter soft drinks”.
However it was only on my way to South America did I truly start to get into Rum drinking. I couldn’t resist buying a couple of 1L bottles duty free to drink with my other Rum appreciating friends when they popped over to visit my house!
I have since become slightly obsessed with Rum. Not with the drinking, but with the lifestyle and history of rums from around the world and as a result this website has been created to share my passion for Rum Drinks.
I hope you enjoy!
Great info…and I see you are a fan of St. Lucia’s Food & Rum Festival…gotta love the rum if ya love the islands!
